How to Store Loose Leaf Tea in Canisters

Quick Answer

Store loose leaf tea in an airtight, opaque ceramic canister away from light, heat, and moisture. Love Tea's ceramic canisters are designed for exactly this purpose.

Steps to Store Loose Leaf Tea in Canisters

1. 1. Choose a clean, dry canister: Ensure your ceramic canister is completely dry and free of any residue. Even a trace of moisture can lead to mold or stale tea. Wash and dry thoroughly before first use.
2. 2. Fill with loose leaf tea: Pour your loose leaf tea directly into the canister, leaving a little headspace to allow for easy scooping. Do not overfill or pack tightly. Avoid compressing the leaves to preserve their structure.
3. 3. Seal immediately after each use: Always close the lid tightly after taking out tea. Exposure to air accelerates staling. Check that the seal is intact. A quick twist ensures a proper seal.
4. 4. Store in a cool, dark place: Place the canister in a cupboard away from the stove, sink, or windows. Heat and direct sunlight can ruin tea within days. Avoid the countertop near the kettle.
5. 5. Label and rotate stock: Write the tea name and purchase date on a label or the bottom of the canister. Use older tea first to enjoy it at peak freshness. Rotate your stash to avoid forgotten blends.
